Soap Box Sizes: How to Measure Bars and Pick the Right Box

A good soap box shows off your bar and keeps it clean, dry and unscratched. A box that is too tight damages the corners. A box that is too loose lets the bar slide and makes the product look cheap. This guide shows how to measure a handmade bar, which box styles suit soap, and how to avoid sizing mistakes before you order custom soap boxes.

Measure the bar, not the mold

Handmade bars vary because they are cut by hand and they shrink a little as they cure. Measure three or four finished bars after curing, then use the largest length, width and height from that group. Write the size as length x width x height in inches, and always keep that order when you send it to a supplier.

Typical bar sizes

Many small batch bars are roughly 3 to 4 inches long, 2 to 2.5 inches wide and 1 to 1.5 inches tall, and weigh about 3 to 5 ounces. Treat this only as a starting range. Your own mold and your own cut decide the real numbers.

Add a small allowance

Add about 1/8 inch to the length and width so the bar slides in without force. If you wrap the bar in paper or add a label, include that thickness as well. Leave the height snug so the bar does not rattle.

Which box style suits soap?

• Sleeve box: a printed band that slides over the bar. It is light, low cost and shows part of the soap.
• Slide box: a tray with a sleeve. It feels more premium and protects the bar better.
• Tuck end box: a folding carton with a closing flap. It is simple, stackable and good for retail shelves.

• Measuring one bar instead of several.
• Forgetting that natural bars change size slightly as they dry.

• Choosing a box with no room for a label or ingredient list.
