Skincare Box Sizes: How to Measure Bottles, Jars and Tubes for the Right Box
Skincare boxes look simple, but a box that is 3 mm too tight or too loose causes real problems. Tight boxes tear at the corners and crush labels. Loose boxes let a glass bottle rattle in transit. This guide shows how to measure bottles, jars and tubes so your first order fits.
Measure the product, with the cap or pump on
Measure the finished product exactly as it will sit in the box. A dropper bottle should be measured with the dropper attached, and a pump bottle with the pump in place. Write the numbers as length, width and height in inches or millimetres, and use the largest value you find, because small batches often vary a little between bottles.
Typical sizes to start from
These are common ranges only. Your bottle and jar suppliers differ, so always measure your own.
- 1 oz (30 ml) dropper bottle: roughly 1.3 in wide and 3.5 to 4 in tall
- 2 oz (60 ml) bottle with a pump: roughly 1.6 in wide and 4.5 to 5.5 in tall
- 2 oz (60 ml) cream jar: roughly 2.2 in wide and 1.5 to 2 in tall
- Squeeze tube (1 to 2 oz): roughly 1.2 in wide and 4 to 5.5 in long, laid flat
Add a small allowance
For a single product box, add about 1/8 inch to the width and depth so it slides in without scuffing the label, and keep the height snug. If you want to ship the product in a set, such as a serum and a moisturizer together, measure them side by side and add a divider or insert so they do not knock against each other.
Which box style suits skincare?
Tuck end boxes are the usual choice for single bottles and tubes, and they stack well on a shelf. Sleeve boxes work well for jars and for a clean, light look. Rigid boxes with an insert suit gift sets and premium products. If you are comparing options, our custom cosmetic boxes page shows the styles we make.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring the bottle without the cap or pump
- Forgetting that glass needs a little more protection than plastic
- Leaving no room for a label or a batch sticker
- Ordering a large run before testing a mockup with a real product
