How to Measure a Product for Custom Packaging (With a Simple Checklist)
The most common reason a custom box feels wrong is simple: it was sized around the bare product. Here is how to measure properly before you order, so the box fits the first time.
Step 1: Measure the product the way it will actually ship
Measure the length, width and height of the product itself. Then add everything that goes in the box with it: tissue paper, a thank you card, a paper insert, or a second item. If it ships together, it gets measured together.
Step 2: Use the same order every time
Packaging suppliers read dimensions as length, width, height. Length is the longest side of the opening, width is the shorter side of the opening, and height is the depth. Writing the numbers in this order avoids a box that arrives turned the wrong way.
Step 3: Think about weight and how it ships
A light item such as a soap bar or a lip balm is fine in a standard folding carton or a pillow box. A glass candle, a bottle or a gift set needs sturdier board and usually a custom insert so it does not move. Tell your supplier the weight and whether it ships by mail or sits on a shelf.
Step 4: Leave a little room, but not too much
A box that is tight can crush the product or tear when you close it. A box that is too loose lets the product slide around. A small, even gap around the product is the goal, and an insert is the cleanest way to hold it in place.
Step 5: Ask for a digital mock-up before printing
Before anything is printed, a good supplier shares a dieline and a digital mock-up so you can check the size, the artwork and the panel layout. At Modern Boxes the digital mock-up is free, and production takes 15 to 17 business days after you approve it.
A quick checklist you can copy
- Length, width and height of the product
- What else goes in the box (tissue, card, insert, second item)
- Weight of the full packed item
- Fragile or not
- How it ships: mail, courier or in store
- Box style you have in mind
Send these details with your request and you will get a much more accurate quote and mock-up.
Sizing notes by product
Candle boxes: measure the diameter and height of the jar or tin, and decide if you want one candle or a set. Soap boxes: measure the cured bar, not the wet one. Pillow boxes: the curved sides reduce usable space, so check the fit before approving the dieline. Mailer boxes: include everything that goes inside, including inserts and cards.
