Candle Box Sizes: How to Measure Jars and Pick the Right Box

A candle box has two jobs. It has to protect a fragile jar during shipping, and it has to look good on a shelf or in a gift unboxing. Both depend on getting the size right. This guide explains how to measure a candle, how much room to leave, and which styles work best for custom candle boxes.

Measure the finished candle

Measure the jar or tin after the candle is poured and the lid is on. Record the diameter and the total height including the lid. For a square box, the inside length and width should both be based on the diameter, since the candle is round. Write the final size as length x width x height in inches.

Typical candle sizes

Many small batch candles use jars of about 2.5 to 3.5 inches across and 3 to 4 inches tall, and hold roughly 6 to 9 ounces. Travel tins are smaller, and large three wick candles are bigger. These are starting ranges only, so always measure your own jar.

Add room for protection

Add about 1/4 inch to the diameter so the jar slides in easily, and add height if you use an insert, tissue or a divider. Glass candles travel better with an insert that holds the jar still, because a loose jar can crack or scuff against the box wall.

Which box style suits candles?

  • Mailer box: strong enough to ship direct to customers and good for subscription or gift orders.
  • Tuck end box: a light folding carton for retail shelves and farmers markets.
  • Rigid box: a premium choice for gift sets and higher priced candles.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring the jar without the lid.
  • Forgetting the insert or tissue thickness.
  • Ordering a box for one candle size when you sell several sizes.
  • Ordering a large quantity before approving a mockup.
